Obtaining Building Permits
In Western Australia, in order to obtain a Building Permit for your project your local shire will require that your project complies with the National Construction Code.
Avon Valley Engineering can assist in completing forms for shire approval.

What are you building?
New Home? Extending or Altering an Existing Home?
Residential Homes are a Class 1a structure.
Avon Valley Engineering can provide quality, cost-effective engineering design to bring your dream home or renovation to life. This will ensure that your project will meet the Australian standards for strength and serviceability for the environment, loads and purpose for which it is being built.
In WA, in order to obtain a Building Permit for a class 1a structure, your local shire will require that you submit a FORM BA2 that can be found on the Shire’s website. (See LINKS page.) The form will typically require you to also submit drawings signed and approved by a Structural Engineer as compliant with the relevant Australia Standards. Avon Valley Engineering can assist with BA2 submission.
Please note: Structural Drawings are different from Architectural Drawings. Please ask if you are unsure about what drawings you have in your free consultation.
Non-inhabitable Structure (eg. Sheds, garages, patios, gazebos, fences and retaining walls)
This is a Class 10 structure.
Avon Valley Engineering can provide quality, cost-effective engineering design to ensure that your new structure will meet Australian standards for strength and serviceability for the environment, loads and purpose for which it is being built.
In WA, in order to obtain a Building Permit for a class 10 structure, your local shire will require you to submit a FORM BA2 that can be found on their website. (See LINKS page) The form will typically require you to also submit drawings signed and approved by a Structural Engineer as compliant with the relevant Australia Standards. Avon Valley Engineering assist with BA2 submission.
Commerical or Industrial Building or Structure
This will be a Class 2- 9 Structure.
In WA, in order to obtain a Building Permit for a Class 2-9 structure, your local shire will require you to hire a Registered Building Surveyor to assess your plans and Submit a FORM BA1 that can be found on your local shire’s website. (See LINKS page)
The Registered Building Surveyor will need you to provide structural drawings approved by a structural engineer in order for them to conduct their assessment. Avon Valley Engineering can assist with documentation for BA1 Submission.

Loretta Jones is a Chartered Professional Engineer with over 17 years experience as a structural design consultant.
Loretta Jones has primarily worked in steelwork but also has experience in masonry, concrete and timber design from concept all the way through to construction completion. This includes, buildings, shade structures, retaining and noise walls, car ports, industrial warehouses, structures to support equipment, machinery or water tanks and even a shelter for the Giraffes at Perth Zoo.
Loretta has worked on a wide range of projects in a range of industries including education, government, commercial, retail, entertainment and residential sectors.
Loretta has a strong interest in design for rural living and unique character homes.
